City Commission Meeting 2-23-09

Here's a brief recounting:

They talked about a whole bunch of budget issues. They bickered a little. They joked a little. They made a big deal out of $50,000 that would be spent on cleaning up the G&C Foundry property because that amount of money was comparable to an "FTE" (Stahl's acronym for what it costs to pay a full time employee.) The commission is coming to grips with the fact that the city is facing nearly a million dollar budget deficit and cuts will have to be made in some way or another.

The idea of teaming up with Erie Metroparks to clean up Lions Park came up. Great idea, but I don't see how they're going to help Sandusky clean up the park without benefiting in some way. Are they going to ask to slap EMP signs up or something? Why would they want to help? Where's the catch?

Like I said, this is going to be brief because posting the minutes would be an easier way to carry out discussions about city budget issues. I think I'll check on how to do just that...

Then the audience participation started. Nuesse's federal suit was on everyone's minds...

The city of Elyria in Lorain County is over twice as large as Sandusky and the are considering reducing their city law director to a part time position.....why not do the same here and reduce the position to 25% of a full time?

Seems like with all of the bad legal decisions made over the last year that the city could save even more money by not having an over paid city law dierctor...

Great video! You captured the dejected look on Kline's face. Got the whole piece on tape. Nice job.

The video of Matt Kline was very telling. His body language screams contempt for the people and loathing for the public forum. This is obviously a guy who likes to conduct business out of the public eye. His last government position was City Counclil member. There was a long gap in his public service before that. Who vetted this guy? This forum is doing a fine job of bringing out the other side of this story. Thanks.

This city has operated on a double standard for a very long time. Whatever suits their agendas is the method they use in their standards. I cannot believe Waddington sitting there and not voiceing his opinion on this. He ran as a common citizens who would look out for the citizens and then does an about face and falls in line with "little Hitler". He called the Murman report a piece of trash but allows the same people to do the internal investigation on Kline. I have been a supervisor for over 40 years and anytime a supervisor is accused of sexual harassment he or she is put on paid suspension until the investigation is complete. You do not use your own people to do the investigation. Kline was not put on suspension and the investigation was done by the same incompentent people who did the flawed, and that is putting it mildly, investigation on Nuesse. Talk about our leadership being blind in the leadership of our city, this reeks of lies and crooked behind the door agreements. It is time for a recall of these commissioners for leading this town down the path or ruination and bankruptcy.

Let's get real....public officials are not going to comment on an allegation currently in the courts.

How did you expect City Manager Kline to look when this matter was brought up ? Anyone would be uncomfortable and embarrassed, whether the allegations are true or without merit.

I am more upset the commissioners voted to proceed with the G and C Foundry site cleanup when waiting 2 weeks would have given the city inspector time to declare the site a safety hazard and improving the city's chances of recouping the cleanup costs. Why even have a city solicitor if you're not going to heed his advice on the legal standing of a lien ?

Kline never makes eye contact. He is constantly looking up or down and looks to be asleep with his eyes closed most of the time. The city made a mistake by not addressing his problem in public instead, the city sits on this little secret for a whole year never once allowing the public in on what is going on. As far as the investigation, it was on Nuesse's dishonesty and not about Kline's sexual harassment charge. As for the attorney, Margaret Cannon, she should be investigated for an ethics charge for representing Kline and on the other hand trying Nuesse's case.

To the person that said let's get real no public official is going to comment on an allegation that is on going in court. If you were paying attention Mr. Kline did not think twice about commenting on this case at the Rotary Club meeting. So the city has double standards when it comes to their own? Icsman should have warned Kline not to make any comments at any time until this is settled in court. If Kline is going to open up this can, he and the city better be ready to come clean with the whole story.

Double standards is right! Nuesse was put on administrative leave before she was fired. Now this comes up with Kline. So why isn't HE put on administrative leave until this is resolved and then he can either be re-instated, or fired.

What's fair for Nuesse should be fair for Kline.

Great video 411!

To John Doe; the reason is because the city attorney had the same Murman people do the investigation, and we all know what a joke that was, and they came up with nothing, which is what you would expect them to come up with since they are on the city payroll. The proper way was to put Kline on paid leave and allow anyone else that had a problem with Kline to come forward, which they would not do when Kline is still their supervisor. They should have used an outside source to do this investigation, and I don't mean one of their paid flunkies like the Murman people to do this. They knew if they truly used a group outside their influence Kline would have been found guilty and as such they would be forced to release him. If they did that then the MD fiasco would fall apart at the seams and they do not want this to happen.

The city commission is either as dumb or dumber than some of the Nuesse haters that are blogging away to save their faces from all of the grief coming their way with the Federal lawsuit. A jury will certainly side with Nuesse since she has all of the facts on her side and given the way the city witnesses will testify this lawsuit is a slam dunk for the returning police chief!!!

It makes me so ashamed to be from the city of Sandusky. The State Attorney's office needs to be called in at this point... Forget that, Murray is now our congressman. The plot thickens with no end in site.

Kline man up, ask to be put on administrative leave, if you have nothing to hide you will be fine.

The city's attorneys are asking stupid off the wall questions for cross examination maybe because they have nothing to come back on. You have two attorneys for the city and this is all they can come up with? I think they have a weak case as they are grasping at straws. They should put Charlie Sams on the stand to explain why he asked to go home and yet his time card states he was at work, and he approved his own time card!

It appears that the GOBs underestimated the Nuesse commitment to complete this silly civil rights commission process.

Stretching out this circus is another indication of poor leadershnip and judgement because like garbage, the longer it stays around the more it stinks, and smelly part is a reflection on the city commissioners, the city law director and the city manager.
